What is Sport Self-Confidence & Efficacy?

Sport self-confidence is the belief that one can successfully perform a desired behavior. It can be state like or trait like. This means self-confidence is determined primarily by personality (trait) or certain situations (state). State self-confidence is also unstable whereas trait self-confidence is stable.

There are various terms related to self-confidence, one which is self-assurance. Self-assurance is having freedom from doubt; belief in yourself and your abilities. Other similar terms that are linked with self-confidence are self-esteem and self-efficacy.

There is much controversy with separating self-confidence and self-efficacy, however efficacy is one's belief in their ability to succeed in specific situations. So the major key to separate the two is that self-efficacy is more situation specific. One's sense of self-efficacy can play a major role in how one approaches goals, tasks, and challenges. These beliefs are how we behave think and feel. Confidence refers to strength of belief but does not necessarily specify what the certainty is about. Self-efficacy therefore, includes both an affirmation of a capability level and the strength of that belief.
